Let’s forget the stigma. We are all on a diet. Being on a diet means that we eat a certain way. Some eat high fat and low carb, others vegan or plant based, comma and others kind of just eat whatever they want.
When I am talking to my clients about healthy eating, I truly believe in the 8020 or 9010 rule. You cannot be perfect with your diet and shouldn’t be. There is freedom and should be freedom in diet and lifestyle changes. Eating around a table is such a social event, that we should be able to enjoy a meal together with others. There is a caveat in that some people cannot eat certain kids because their bodies are not healed, but you have to start somewhere to get back to a better place.
The ideal diet, in my opinion, includes one of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, healthy oils, nuts, seeds, fermented and probiotic foods, and legumes. And with these foods, they fall into the categories of organic, non-GMO, grass-fed and finished, free range, and wild caught.
I do not fully follow these these guidelines or ideals. Again, that 80/20 rule, but also we can’t always afford to eat as perfect as this. Granted, even if we did, our food would still not be free from herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, etc. The important thing is that we do the best that we can, within our means.
Something you can always shoot for is a very colorful plate. The more color, the better. And I’m not talking about food coloring.
Let’s start with the basics. What healthy foods do you have in your house that you consider to be healthy?
